NY Thruway Hazmat Restrictions
The New York State Thruway (I-87/I-90) has multiple hazmat-restricted tunnel sections that route placarded loads around specific tunnels. Non-compliance results in escalation to the NY Department of Environmental Conservation.
Restricted Tunnels
Class 1 (explosives), Class 2.3 (poison gas), and Class 7 (radioactive) are prohibited in several I-87/I-90 tunnels. Verify specific restrictions per placard class.
Routing
Hazmat drivers must use surface arterials around restricted tunnels. NYSDOT publishes designated hazmat routes; USDOT also maintains national hazmat routing.
Bridges and Crossings
Verrazzano, GWB, and Tappan Zee (Mario Cuomo) all have hazmat placard restrictions varying by class. Verify before dispatching.
Documentation
Placarded loads must carry shipping papers matching the placards, plus a route plan documenting compliance. Enforcement is aggressive during CVSA blitzes.
