Colorado Chain Law (I-70)

Colorado enforces one of the strictest chain laws in the U.S., primarily on I-70 through the Rockies. Non-compliance carries $500+ fines and, if you block a lane, up to $1,000 plus recovery costs.

Level 1 vs Level 2

Level 1: chains required on one drive tire per side. Level 2: chains required on all four drive tires. Level 2 is invoked in severe conditions and often applies before storms escalate.

Approved Traction

Chains, cables, or approved auto-socks (AutoSock is CDOT-approved). Studded tires alone do not satisfy chain law when active.

Active Period

Sept 1 – May 31, activated by roadside sign or CDOT declaration. I-70 mile 133–259 (Dowd Junction to Morrison) is the primary chain law zone.

Enforcement

CSP inspects at Silverthorne, Vail, and Georgetown. Blocking a lane by failing to chain triggers escalated fine plus recovery billback.
