Hours of Service (HOS)

Federal limits on driving and on-duty time for commercial drivers, enforced by the FMCSA.

The Hours of Service rule restricts property-carrying CMV drivers to a maximum 11 driving hours after 10 consecutive off-duty hours, within a 14-hour on-duty window. Drivers must also take a 30-minute break by the 8th hour and cannot exceed 60/70 hours over 7/8 days. ELDs automatically log compliance.

Example

A driver who starts the day at 06:00 must complete all driving by 20:00 (14-hour window), with a maximum of 11 hours behind the wheel and a 30-minute break before 14:00.
