Electronic Logging Device (ELD)

A federally mandated device that automatically records a driver's hours of service.

An ELD connects to the truck's engine to capture driving time, location, miles, and engine hours, replacing paper logs. The ELD mandate (December 2017) applies to most interstate CMVs. Devices must be FMCSA-registered and display data to roadside enforcement on request.

Example

A driver completing a Memphis–Dallas haul automatically logs 9.5 driving hours via the ELD, eliminating manual log entries.
