Frequently Asked Questions
What is IFTA and who needs to file?
IFTA (International Fuel Tax Agreement) requires interstate motor carriers operating vehicles over 26,000 lbs to report fuel usage and pay taxes quarterly across jurisdictions they travel through.
How is IFTA tax calculated?
IFTA compares fuel tax already paid at the pump to what you owe based on miles driven in each state. If you drove more in a high-tax state than fuel purchased there, you owe the difference.
What records do I need for IFTA?
You need: miles driven per state (from trip reports/ELD), fuel purchased per state (from receipts/fuel cards), and vehicle identification. Keep records for 4 years.
When are IFTA quarterly reports due?
Q1 (Jan–Mar): April 30. Q2 (Apr–Jun): July 31. Q3 (Jul–Sep): October 31. Q4 (Oct–Dec): January 31. Late filing incurs penalties and interest.
