Frequently Asked Questions

What is fleet utilization?

Fleet utilization is the percentage of available truck-hours (or truck-days) that are actually producing revenue. It compares the hours a truck could be running loads against the hours it actually was.

What is a good fleet utilization rate?

Well-run fleets hit 75–85% utilization. Anything below 65% means trucks are sitting for detention, maintenance, or driver shortage. Above 90% usually signals over-scheduling that risks HOS violations and driver burnout.

How is utilization different from asset productivity?

Utilization measures time — how much of the available window a truck is working. Asset productivity measures revenue per truck. A fleet can be highly utilized on low-paying freight and still miss revenue targets.

How do I raise utilization?

Cut detention by scheduling tighter windows, drop trailers when possible, reduce maintenance downtime with a PM schedule, and use dispatch software to keep drivers in a load-ready state as often as possible.
