Who is exempt from the ELD mandate?

Exemptions include: short-haul drivers using timecard exception (150 air-mile radius, return to base within 14 hours), drivers of vehicles manufactured before 2000, driveaway-towaway operations, and agricultural operations during planting/harvest seasons.

What happens if my ELD fails during a trip?

Drivers must note the malfunction on paper logs, continue logging on paper, and notify the carrier within 24 hours. The carrier has 8 days to repair or replace the device. Drivers must carry enough blank paper log forms.

Can I be placed out of service for ELD violations?

Yes. Drivers can be placed OOS for: no ELD installed when required, using a non-registered device, ELD not functioning and no paper logs, or inability to transfer data to an inspector.

Do hazmat carriers have additional ELD requirements?

While ELD requirements are the same, hazmat carriers face stricter HOS enforcement and higher penalties. They must also maintain security plans, hazmat endorsements, and PHMSA registration alongside ELD compliance.
